Originally a farm on the banks of the St. Johns River, the area now known as San Marco was called Oklahoma.  One of the most prominent citizens of Oklahoma was Harrison Reed, who was elected Florida’s governor in 1868 and 1873.  Reed’s sister, Margaret Reed Mitchell and her husband, Wisconsin railroad tycoon Alexander Mitchell, fell in love with Oklahoma and built their winter home, Villa Alexandria, on 140 acres on the river.

The development of the “South Bank” began in earnest with the opening of the St. Johns River Bridge (renamed the Acosta) in 1921.  Telfair Stockton bought 80 acres of land north of the Mitchell estate for the new “San Marco” subdivision.  The business district was based on the Piazza di San Marco in Venice, Italy, which had impressed Mr. Stockton on a European trek.

Its boundaries are I-95 to the north, Greenridge Road to the south, Philips Highway on the east and the St. Johns River on the west.

Today San Marco has retained much of its history and flair. With many period buildings, sculptures, fountains and parks, San Marco is alive with charm. It has become a mecca for Jacksonville culture, home to the city’s best restaurants and cafes, bookstores, theatres, and art galleries.

Housing is diverse, from the original 1920 style single family homes to modern condominiums; San Marco is still the place to live. A pedestrian friendly community with walking and biking paths, all within easy reach of boutique shipping, dining, and entertainment.

Culture, history, and charm, all within minutes of Downtown, experience San Marco for your self!

In July of 2010, there were 11 residential homes sold in the San Marco FL Real Estate market . The median sales price was $139,900 with the highest priced home selling for $305,000 and the lowest priced selling for $43,000.

There are many wonderful homes in this area, but you need a local market expert to help you. Watson Realty Corp is a locally owned company with over 40 years experience selling homes in the area. Call the Watson experts at 800-257-5143.
